Suggestion to remove reference to adjuncts teaching a high number of courses from public document. Suggestion to add language to show that peer review also looks at student learning outcomes. Suggestion to add grading practices to list of things to be evaluated in peer review Many other modest edits made to wording of draft proposal. Discussed the idea of best teachers being available for classroom visits of other faculty. Chair posed, Is it a good idea? Committee generally thought this was a good idea. Suggestion to add that the best teachers be designated by Deans. Discussed the idea of a once a year meeting for departments to discuss assessment, possibly in Dover facility. Committee generally thought this was a good idea. Timing and next steps: Chair to send out a new draft to be voted upon. If approved, the proposal will go to Provost. TAM and TAME grants Chair updated committee on TAM and TAME grants. TAM had 6 proposals, 5 of which received partial or full funding. TAME had 3 proposals, all of which received funding. Chair suggested more needed to be done to encourage proposals that incorporate inter-disciplinary course ideas. Noise and Music near Classrooms Chair informed committee regarding complaints due to loud music recently being played during classroom hours. Loud music disrupts classroom teaching and inhibits studying in the library. Committee generally agreed this is a problem, but had differing ideas on how best to deal with it. Some asked is this merely a matter of getting an existing ordinance enforced? Should this come from the UCT at all? Others posited, does it send the wrong message regarding school priorities when loud music is blaring next to the library? A recommendation from the UCT shows the schools commitment to academics. Committee generally agreed to make a request in some form to the Provost to investigate best ways to address this. Course Withdrawals Proposal considered to move the course withdrawal date 2 weeks earlier. Many suggested that our withdrawal date is unusually late compared to other universities. Some committee members suggested that a late withdrawal leads students not to work as hard as they could to improve in a class. Some committee members indicated that late withdrawals can alter the grading curve to the detriment of other students. However, other committee members expressed concerns, since some students may not have enough information to make a decision regarding the course if the date is moved too far forward. Other committee members also suggested students will work harder if the date is later. Committee agreed to discuss this again at the next meeting. Next meeting is set for May 13, at 9:00 a.m. Minutes prepared by Darren Kisgen \, . Q W X u v > C O $ 1 K L p | r +,mnֵֹֽֽֽh1 h:jh:j5h:jhkh)h7h#ah7h~h7h`5 h75h`hK9hkh,5hkhK95 h875 h87h h 5?.EP[\{- .
