Finding Perspective in Asia
I used to think the U.S. was a massive melting pot, but then I went to Singapore. I believe the Indian, Malaysian, Chinese, and Indonesian influence makes Singapore the wonderful place it is. Singapore has such a blend of culture, religion, and language -- all mixed up with a very modern feel. If you ever get the chance to go, I highly recommend it.
I was in Singapore for two months this Summer doing a consulting internship with a Singaporean company. Of course, I learned a lot on the job, but more importantly, I learned more about the world. One of the most memorable weekends I had was a solo trip to Cambodia, where I spent some time at the ancient temples in Siem Reap and then some time in Phnom Penh learning about the Khmer Rouge, the Communist movement that killed聽two million Cambodians from 1975 to 1979. I had never learned of such things in elementary, middle, or high school. It shocked me to realize that the 鈥淲estern world鈥 knows so little about the rest of global history when there are so many valuable lessons to learn.聽
Another memorable experience was in Phuket, Thailand, where I took a separate solo trip and learned more about Buddhism. At the "Big Buddha" statue, a monk sat in silence. We spoke a bit, and he invited me to a meditation, then gave me a small book on Buddhism afterward. I offered him some Thai currency in exchange for this experience, but he profusely declined. This was another eye-opening experience that I am grateful to have had while in Asia.聽
Spending time in Asia (or anywhere outside your home) is the best opportunity for growth. Along with the phenomenal (and cheap) food, work experience, and cultural immersion, you gain a deeper understanding of a region of the world that is quickly growing. Being exposed to multiple different religions and cultures for an extended period of time quickly made me want to spend more time on the side of the world, where I hope to work in my mid-twenties.聽
I am very grateful that 涩里番下载 OGE offers the opportunity for an experience like this one. For anyone considering, I highly recommend it!
