Dan Crane serves as a Massachusetts district court judge in Lowell.Ìý The is a community court that handles criminal and civil business, including jury trials, as well as domestic abuse prevention and mental health matters.Ìý He is the judicial leader of the mediation and conciliation programs for civil cases at that court.
Crane concluded over two years of service as undersecretary for in March 2009.Ìý The Massachusetts commissioners of banks and insurance and four other agencies reported to him.
Crane was selected by Governor Patrick to respond to rising levels of residential foreclosures, including implementation of legislation enacted in November 2007.Ìý He worked with the division of insurance to restore competition to the Massachusetts auto insurance market for the first time in more than 30 years.Ìý He also adopted first in the nation standards for data security protecting Massachusetts residents and businesses.
He has led public and private organizations and served on business and government boards.Ìý The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court appointed him to chair the state’s lawyer discipline board for two years and later to lead its that is responsible for investigating and prosecuting allegations of lawyer misconduct for almost seven years.Ìý He improved efficiency there, reducing the total number of investigations by 50% and concluding matters under investigation more promptly.
During his 24 years of private law practice, he was also president of the Massachusetts Bar Association and its Foundation. He established professional education programs that are still presented, and he continues to provide professional education in Massachusetts and with national organizations.Ìý He teaches classes in negotiation at ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØ Law School.
He served as chair of the board’s audit committee at Cambridgeport Bank, as a mutual, and through its conversion to a public company.Ìý He also served as a member of the city of Cambridge’s retirement board, directing the investment of the city’s pension assets.
Crane has also provided volunteer leadership and board service at Mount Auburn Hospital and the local YMCA and Little League, chamber of commerce, and other service organizations for many years.Ìý He also chaired the community selection committee to select the Cambridge police commissioner on two occasions.
