Dr. Chaturvedi is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town.

As part of her remote appointment, Chaturvedi will join Center co-director Prof. Brinton Lykes and Lynch School of Education and Human Development Professor Alex听Pieterse to give at Venice International University from July 22-26, 2024.

Chaturvedi's professional overview:

In the last ten years, two sets of events have had a crucial influence on my professional trajectory鈥攖he growth of violent nationalism in India, and the intensified calls for a transformed more just curriculum in South Africa. I have responded to these events by building a research agenda that attends closely to lineages of political violence in India while reckoning with divisive politics across the world; by developing a teaching practice that creatively animates students鈥 engagements with fraught pasts and present of postcolonial polities; and by supporting a curriculum that trains them to not only critically study politics in the global south, but also re-think and re-make its hegemonic institutions, ideas and practices.

My publications and research emphasize the value of comparative insights to understand shared postcolonial inheritances鈥 forms of rule, political and judicial systems, political subjectivities, group violence and efforts to undo and repair their harm. The question of what it means to theorize about these topics in globally salient terms drawing on multiple disciplines and methodologies has become a crucial strand in my work as evident in my recent book Violence of Democracy: Interparty Conflict in South India (2023, Duke University Press and Orient Blackswan) and edited volume Epistemic Justice and the Postcolonial University (2023, Wits University Press).

In the last few years, I have especially sought to develop modes of theoretical and historical analyses that juxtapose race and ethnicized differences on the African continent, and religion and caste on the Indian subcontinent. The affinities between anti-racist, anti-caste and anti-majoritarian thought and movements has become an important new focus of my work. Workshops and conferences I have been organizing on this topic, and research and analyses I have been carrying out are part of a larger collaboration with colleagues based in South Africa and several other parts of the global south who came together to create an A. W. Mellon funded consortium of seven universities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle-East called 鈥極ther Universals: Thinking from the South on Traditions of Politics and Aesthetics.鈥

My own research and engagement with political life in India has also found multiple media outlets. Since the ascendance of extreme right-wing groups to state power in India in 2014, I have sought to actively advocate against violent majoritarianism and repressive laws. The question of how we might recover a more just and equal India remains at the heart of campaigns I am a part of. This advocacy through various public platforms, lectures and writings has, in turn, sharpened my academic analyses and arguments about the relationship between modern political institutions and violence.

Ricardo Falla Sanchez, SJ

Ricardo Falla S谩nchez is a Guatemalan Jesuit anthropologist who completed his PhD at the University of Texas in Austin after having studied theology in Innsbruck, Austria with Karl Rahner, among others.听 He has dedicated his life to documenting the lives and cultures of Maya in Guatemala and other indigenous peoples in Central America. His writings听have听documented multiple听Mayan communities including their revitalization through, among other initiatives, their engagement with strong religious movements, attempts to destroy their communities through the brutal massacres of the 1980s, and听their struggles for justice and human rights. Between 1982 and 1993 he spent multiple years, including some of the worst of the armed conflict, accompanying what were to become the听Communities of Populations in Resistance听in the Ixc谩n.

Among his many publications is included a monograph based on his PhD dissertation,听Quich茅 Rebelde (1978),听and published in English in 2001 as听Quich茅 Rebelde. Religious Conversion, Politics, and Ethnic Identity in Guatemala.听His 1984 Spanish language monograph,听Esa muerte que nos hace vivir [That death that makes us live]听is perhaps the best example of how ethnography can serve as metaphor. Falla is perhaps most widely known听for his 1992 publication听Masacres de la Selva听鈥 a volume that appeared in English,听Massacres听in the Jungle, in 1994.听 He has recently published three books on Mayan听youth, two focused on those from the Ixc谩n area of Guatemala:听Alicia: Explorando la identidad de una joven maya [Exploring identity: The story of a Maya youth] (2005) and Juventud de una comunidad maya: Ixc谩n, Guatemala [Youth from a Maya Community, Ixc谩n, Guatemala] (2006) and a third volume,听Migraci贸n transnacional retornada: Juventud ind铆gena de Zacualpa, Guatemala [Transnational migration and return: Indigenous youth of Zacualpa, Guatemala] (2007)听which focuses on youth who have immigrated to the United States and voluntarily returned to Guatemala.听He is currently publishing the sixth听volume of what will be eight听volumes of his heretofore unpublished work,听Al atardecer de la vida听[At the sunset of life].

Falla gave a lecture at a Center event on Oct. 16, 2018,听听.

Falla was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Costa Rica on April 19, 2022 to recognize his life's work.听听.

Kanishka Sikri () is a writer and scholar researching violability: the practice that marks certain lives, bodies, and lands to the possibility of violence. Kanishka is formally trained as an International Development Specialist from the University of Toronto, and is currently a PhD Candidate at York University speculating on the ways violence becomes synonymous with and inhabits the lifetimes of Black, Brown, and Indigenous women in Canada and the world.

Kanishka founded Lottet (lets open that third eye together), a consulting firm that works with community, corporate, and government clients around the many faces and forms of violence, from its racialized arm to its gendered leg to its ecological face and its epistemic shape. Through Lottet, Kanishka has provided subject matter expertise and led consulting on projects like the National Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence with YWCA Canada and Framework for Transformative Human-Rights Based Organizational Change with OCAD University. Kanishka is also a speaker and facilitator with clients like the United Nations, SPARC, and the Aga Khan Foundation.

Kanishka is honoured to be a Fellow at the Center for Human Rights and International Justice at 涩里番下载 during the Summer of 2023. They hope to engage a lifetime project that does not just duel and battle, but betray violence, revoke it, call for its surrender so that we can intimately imagine worlds without it.

2019-2020 academic year

脰zg眉r Erdur-Baker is a Professor of the Psychological Counseling and Guidance working at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. She has M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Counseling Psychology from University of Texas-Austin. She has extensive teaching and research background in the disciplines of developmental, educational and counseling psychology. She is an author of numerous national and international journal articles, book chapters and conference proceedings. Her main research interests are trauma/disaster psychology; gender and cultural issues in counseling;听 school violence including cyber and traditional bullying; and impacts of information and communication technologies on children and adolescents.

Dr. Erdur-Baker is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar Award recipient, which is supporting her current research project "Developing a Need Based, Gender and Culture Sensitive Psychosocial Support Intervention Model for Displaced Syrians Through Community-Based Participatory Research."

The project aims to address the lack of a culture- and gender-sensitive model for Turkey detailing how to provide psychosocial support for displaced Syrians. 听The desired model should draw from the needs/struggles of this population and outline which factors foster resilience, and which factors hinder adjustment and thereby exacerbate psychological problems. Moreover, the model should target the needs of local population as well. The local people鈥檚 perceptions and attitudes toward the refugee population have important implications for the effectiveness of the intervention models. The existing scientific literature warns that immigrants may suffer from discrimination but rarely describes how to address this issue during the implementation of the psychosocial interventions. 听Therefore, this multi-phased, cross-cultural, qualitative research aims to a) identify shortcomings of existing models and the sociocultural factors impacting the well-being of Syrians and b) develop a culture and gender sensitive model. Community based participatory research integrated with Assets Mapping Approach will be utilized.

Currently, and while at 涩里番下载, she is working on innovative, flexibile, and rights-based regulatory approches and procedures in EU immigration/migration law in the EU, EU Member-States and beyond. Based on the deep interconnection between due process and substantive rights of migrants and the need to protect human rights and other constitutional protections pending the admission/removal procedures, the aim is that of understanding if and how smat(er) regulatory strategies and procedures may allow the flexibility democracies need to deal with the 鈥済oing global鈥 migration phenomenon, without betraying their committment to human rights and rule of law standards. 听From this perspective, migration (and/or immigration) regulatory strategies are a perfect testbed or opportunity for re-inventing democracies and key concepts such as that of sovereingnty and rule of law.
